Feel calm and deeply relaxed during your dental treatment. IV sedation can help if you feel anxious about the dentist, have a strong gag reflex or need longer treatment such as implants.

IV sedation is a sedative medicine given through a cannula, a small, thin tube placed in the back of your hand or arm. Within a few minutes you feel deeply relaxed. You stay awake and able to respond, but many people remember little of their treatment afterwards. It isn't a general anaesthetic, so you're not put to sleep, and your dentist still uses local anaesthetic to numb the area being treated. Throughout your appointment, a trained team monitors your breathing, oxygen levels, pulse and blood pressure, in line with the UK standards for conscious sedation in dentistry.
IV sedation at Harley Private is provided by Dr Ehsan Naghieh, a principal dentist and director with over 10 years of clinical experience and a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Implant Surgery. Known for his calm and respectful manner, he offers both oral and IV sedation for patients who feel anxious, and takes time to make sure you feel informed, listened to and at ease.

IV sedation may help if you feel anxious or very nervous about dental treatment, have had a difficult experience in the past, have a strong gag reflex, or need longer or more complex treatment such as dental implants, wisdom tooth removal or several extractions. It can also make it possible to complete more treatment in one visit. Before recommending sedation, we'll check your medical history and the medicines you take. It may not be suitable for everyone, for example during pregnancy or with certain medical conditions, and your dentist will talk you through other options if so. Suitability for younger patients is assessed individually.

Before your appointment, follow the written instructions we give you about eating and drinking, take your usual medicines unless we tell you otherwise, wear loose, comfortable clothing and remove any nail varnish. You'll need a responsible adult to bring you, take you home and stay with you for the rest of the day. On the day, once the cannula is in place, the sedative is given gradually until you feel relaxed. Your dentist then numbs the area with local anaesthetic and carries out your treatment, while the team monitors you throughout. Afterwards, you'll rest at the clinic until you're ready to go home with your escort. For 24 hours, don't drive, cycle, operate machinery, drink alcohol, sign legal documents, make important decisions or look after others on your own. IV sedation is £500 for the first hour and £250 for each extra hour, in addition to your treatment fee.
£500 for the first hour, then £250 for each extra hour needed. This is added to your treatment fee, and your full fee is confirmed in your written treatment plan.

No. IV sedation isn't a general anaesthetic. You stay awake and able to respond to your dentist, but you feel deeply relaxed and may drift in and out of awareness.
Your dentist uses local anaesthetic to numb the area being treated, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment. You may feel some pressure or movement, and the sedation helps you stay relaxed.
Many people remember very little of their treatment afterwards, although this varies from person to person.
You feel relaxed within a few minutes of the sedative being given. The effects wear off gradually over several hours, which is why you need an escort and should rest for the rest of the day.

IV sedation is widely used in UK dentistry. Side effects can include drowsiness and bruising where the cannula was placed. Rarely, breathing can slow or an allergic reaction can occur, so our team monitors you throughout and is trained and equipped to manage this.
