Gentle, thorough professional cleaning to protect your gums, freshen your breath and keep your smile healthy for the long term.
A dental hygiene appointment focuses on the health of your teeth and gums. It removes plaque and tartar, supports healthy gums and helps prevent common problems such as gum disease and tooth decay.
At Harley Private Dental, hygiene care is delivered with a gentle, considered approach, tailored to your needs and your comfort. We take the time to explain what we're doing, work at your pace and show you how to keep your mouth healthy between visits. You don't need a new patient exam to book direct.
A hygiene appointment is a professional clean of your teeth and gums. It removes plaque, hardened tartar and surface staining that brushing alone can't reach, and includes an assessment of your gum health and personalised advice to help you look after your mouth at home.
Regular hygiene care plays an important role in protecting long-term oral health. It also provides the healthy foundation that every other treatment relies on, from fillings and implants to whitening and straightening.
Many people put off a hygiene visit because they're worried it will be uncomfortable. Most appointments are very comfortable, and we'll adjust our approach if your gums are sensitive.

Our before and after images highlight the difference dental implants can make, restoring missing teeth with a fixed solution designed to look and feel natural. Every case is planned individually to achieve balanced, realistic outcomes.
Your hygiene appointment is a calm, unhurried session with a dental professional focused entirely on your gums and teeth. Here's what to expect.
An assessment of your gum health. Your hygienist checks your gums for signs of inflammation, bleeding and recession, and notes how your mouth is changing over time. Healthy gums don't bleed, so this is where early problems are caught.
Removal of plaque and tartar. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that builds up on teeth daily. If it isn't removed, it hardens into tartar, which only a professional can clean off. Using gentle instruments, we remove deposits from above and just below the gumline, including the areas that are hardest to reach at home.
Polishing. Once your teeth are clean, we polish them to remove surface staining from tea, coffee, red wine and tobacco, leaving them smooth and less likely to hold new deposits.
Personalised home-care advice. Your hygienist looks at how you clean at home and recommends what will work for you, including brushing technique, flossing or interdental cleaning, and suitable products.
A plan for your next visit. Not everyone needs the same schedule. Many patients benefit from a visit every six months, but this varies with your gum health, so we'll recommend an interval that suits you.
